Who we are

We are a small, but growing, group of Haitians, Haitian descendants, and friends of Haiti, living in United Kingdom. While we primarily reside in London, there are a few exceptions in Southampton, Oxford, Manchester, and Birmingham. Most of us were born in Haiti, and although we moved abroad at a young age, we continue to identify ourselves as Haitians, and feel a strong connection with our country and our culture. Haiti, once the richest colony of the New World, is today the most impoverished nation in the western hemisphere. As Haitians, we have decided to address some of our country's needs by creating a charity, UHUK (United Haitians in the United Kingdom) in November 2008. UHUK's members are all volunteers. We use all funds received from various events, sponsors, and donations, responsibly meeting regularly in order to find innovative ways of financing our projects.

Our aim

Our main goal is to make a positive contribution in the development of Haiti, and to keep the Haitian culture alive in the United Kingdom. We will financially support worthwhile non-governmental and sustainable educational projects throughout Haiti with an emphasis on children's school fees, uniforms and supplies. We are working directly in Haiti in cooperation with carefully, selected non-governmental organizations. We encourage them to be ethical and responsible in the way they handle the funds given to them, but discourage a relationship of dependency. Transparency is crucial to our charity; we will travel to Haiti when possible in order to monitor our partners closely and to ensure that our funds are supporting those in need.

How to get involved

By participating in our social events, you will be contributing greatly to our cause. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Haiti, its people, and culture (history, music, language, cuisine, arts and crafts). We rely heavily on your support and on your commitment to face the challenge of educating the under privileged children who have little to no hope in the future. We live in a world where nations are inter-related and dependent on each other whether financially, environmentally. What happens in each country, affects everyone. Today's children are not bound only to one nation. We must give the children of Haiti a chance to prove themselves.
