Back to school
Prior to the earthquake, UHUK was sponsoring a primary school named L’AHADEPA in the area of Carrefour,
Port-au-Prince. The school was subsequently destroyed and it took weeks to find some of its students.
To date, we are aware of one child who had to have one of his legs amputated and of another who lost
his life. We still have no news of more than a hundred of the other children. We think that their
families may have left the area in search of a better life, elsewhere.
Despite the precarious conditions we were determined to continue our education programme and the “school’s doors” were re-opened in March under a tent. We have been running a summer school programme, which has even more children and will conclude at the end of September. The school term will resume at the beginning of October and thanks to your support, generosity, and to our team on the field in Haiti, UHUK is leasing a piece of land, located within 50 meters of the collapsed school, for the next three years. This land will house a temporary school setting for over 130 children to receive an education until their school is finally re-built.
Volunteers
In the aftermath of the earthquake, we have had an enormous amount of volunteers. We are gratified to have so many of you willing to help us in our efforts to help the most affected people in Haiti. We cannot thank you enough for your time and support.
UHUK Supporters
Key to achieving our goals is the generosity of our worldwide supporters. We are extremely grateful for the many people who have adopted our cause in their communities around the world. Our support has come from schoolchildren; children sharing their birthday presents; religious groups; universities; local communities; employees giving through their employers with matching funds; private fundraisers and individual regular giving. Thanks again for your continued support.
